The Capistrano Unified School District will be presenting a comprehensive webinar on Feb. 10 all about the district’s Career Technical Education, or CTE.
The webinar, which starts at 11 a.m. and will be recorded for later viewing, will be presented by Pati Romo, Executive Director of College and Career Readiness.
Capistrano Unified’s CTE program is vast and wide, available for students in grades 6 through 12 through single courses or a course series (dubbed a pathway). In fact, Romo said, Capistrano Unified is currently offering 322 periods of CTE across its campuses. Within those, there are 31 pathways and 30 after-school courses that are considered regional, meaning that students can travel beyond their home campus to different campuses to take them.
Subject wise, CTE covers topics like engineering, architecture, being a commercial pilot, dental assistant studies, graphic design, theater production, automotive technology, cybersecurity, culinary arts, medical assistant work and computer programming. The courses can be used for admission to the University of California (on its A to G requirement course list), college credit, internships, and even industry certifications.
Those certifications may include getting signed off on CPR, HIPAA, EMT, x-ray licensing and computer programming languages C++ and A+.
“I’d say there’s something for everybody,” Romo said.
Through a special partnership, Capistrano Unified’s CTE is also extended to Laguna Beach students.
“It’s a great opportunity for all of them,” Romo said.
An example of several CTE disciplines combining all their learning is the tiny home project, Romo said. In the tiny home project, studies like design, carpentry, plumbing and the electrician trade come together when crafting the home.
“It really is a wonderful process,” Romo added.
