Skilled trade career paths Futureology webinar set for May 11

By CUSD Insider staff

Futureology, Capistrano Unified’s college and career counseling program, is hosting a special webinar in May geared for students interested in learning more about skilled trades after their high school careers are over.

“Career Paths: Exploring Trades, Apprenticeships and Vocational Programs” is scheduled for May 11 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Beatrice Nguyen, college and career counselor for the district, is the presenter.

Registration is required, and the link to the webinar will be sent upon registration.

Nguyen noted that the webinar will be of value to students who aren’t necessarily sure about taking a traditional, post-high school college path.

“We recognize that not all students are going straight to a university or community college after they graduate,” she said. “There is a gap we’re trying to fill right now, so we’re going to educate them on what it means to enter a trade or vocational school. What does that look like? What are examples of that?”

Career field examples common among trade or vocational schools include welding, plumbing, HVAC technology, automotive technology, and becoming an electrician.

There are also options such as cybersecurity and healthcare-related jobs, including becoming a medical assistant or certified nurse assistant. There is even a fire academy at Santa Ana College for would-be firefighters.

Nguyen noted that private for-profit schools provide education for these types of fields, but there are also community college options providing this education for little or no cost.

“I really want to provide all options for students so they know about what’s out there for them,” she said. “I’m going to link them up with these programs so they know where to go.”
