CUSD celebrates Classified Employees of the Year

They installed air conditioning and repaired plumbing.

They supplied Chromebooks, fixed Chromebooks, and supplied more Chromebooks.

They monitored social distancing and mask wearing practices.

They made sure students were taken to school and back home.

Classified employees in the Capistrano Unified School District performed these functions and so much more, doing so during a nationwide pandemic.

District officials, school administrators, teachers, and family members gathered in Capistrano Valley High School Theater on May 9, 2022 to celebrate the accomplishments of all classified employees and recognized those who exceeded the expectations of their individual roles.

“You went the extra mile to serve our students,” District Board of Trustees President Martha McNicholas said. “You did it, you do it, and you always do it.”

The district recognized a total of 169 nominees from nine different categories: Clerical and Administrative Services, Paraprofessionals, Food and Nutrition Services, Health and Student Services, Custodial and Maintenance Services, Security Services, Skilled Trades, Transportation Services and Technical Services.

Before announcing the 2022 honorees, officials announced that the 2021 winner in the Office and Technical category, Sheri Saladow, was named California State Classified Employee of the Year in the Health and Student Services Category.

As a longtime advocate for English learners and students with disabilities and with an 18-year career in the district, Saladow “believes deeply in each student’s potential and epitomizes the role of guidance technician supporting students in meeting their potential,” CUSD Chief Communications Officer Ryan Burris said.

The honorees were:

Lori McKain, Clerical and Administrative Services

In her role as senior staff secretary in Education Support Services, McKain supports several departments, including the COVID-19 response team, district nurses, and school counselors.

One nominator said, “Lori is so many things to so many people. Our department would be lost without her as her legacy knowledge and superb work ethic are what keep us going amidst all the changes we’ve had.”

Josephine Walberg, Paraprofessionals

As a paraeducator at Adult Transition Programs for five years, Walberg is paired with a student who has exceptional high needs. Outside of work, Walberg is a court-appointed special advocate and guardian ad litem volunteer working with children who have been abused or neglected.

She is described as a person “who brings out the best, even in bad situations” and “has the patience and knowledge to help calm any situation.”

Eti Fadich, Food and Nutrition Services

As a food service professional at San Juan Hills High School and a 17-year district employee, Fadich was described by a nominator as an individual “with a very high work ethic.”

She is respectful and always sports a smile. Fadich stepped in when needed to run food service at other schools in the district and does whatever it takes to ensure every student has a meal every day.

Kristen Chetekian, Health and Human Services

Chetekian has made invaluable contributions to students during her six years as a licensed vocational nurse in the district.

One nominator recalls the day Chetekian performed the Heimlich maneuver on a student and another instance where she provided an EpiPen for student having an allergic reaction.

Chetekian lives in the community she serves and has developed an “incredible rapport and trust with the students that is hard to come by,” a nominator said.

Gerardo Manjarrez Mata, Custodial and Maintenance Services

Nominators shared multiple instances when Mata responded to the needs of students and staff, which include caring for the grounds, repairing equipment, setting up events, and moving furniture.

Mata has worked in the district for seven years and is currently assigned to Dana Hills High School.

Ken O’Toole, Security Services

O’Toole has forged great relationships with students and staff at Dana Hills, nominators said. As a firefighter for 27 years, O’Toole displays the ability to act quickly, make safety assessments, and stay calm in stressful situations.

He once performed the Heimlich maneuver on a choking student.

“We cannot thank Ken enough for working hard to keep students safe and school property secured,” said Jen Smalley, who presented the award to O’Toole.

Jack Scheid, painter, Skilled Trades

Scheid regularly arrives an hour early to work and makes an extra effort to wipe down doorknobs and computers in the maintenance and operations unit every day to help keep the staff safe. He has also put in time after hours to perform painting projects when needed.

“We appreciate that he mentors other department employees who assist with his projects,” said Chief Facilities Officer John Forney, who presented Scheid with his award.

Matthew Martinez, Transportation

With the department being short staffed this year, Martinez ensured that all of the district trips were coordinated and staffed with drivers.

He doesn’t hesitate to confirm trips with coaches and teachers beforehand and checks in with drivers to ensure they are on time, Transportation Director Jay McNamara said. Martinez delivers exceptional customer service and maintains a positive attitude and strong work ethic, McNamara said.

“We are grateful to have Matthew as a dispatcher and a valued six-year member of our transportation team,” McNamara said.

Brian Persall, Technical Services

As a programmer/analyst, “Brian is nothing short of amazing,” said Chief Technology Officer Sean Rozell, who presented Persall’s award.

Persall created a program which provided site administrators with a simple method of running complicated reports. He also created a web interface system for reporting COVID-19 cases along with an automated system for teachers to complete weekly engagement logs during online learning.

All nominees were recognized at the event, and the winners were named. Congratulations to all who were nominated for their excellent contributions to Capistrano Unified School District.
