The CIF Southern Section announced the winners of the 35th annual FORD Academic Awards, honoring the top student-athlete and team academic performances of the 2022-23 season. The awards are presented in 27 team sports, recognizing 251 student-athletes and 1,902 teams.
There were 66 CUSD teams that received Team Academic Awards. San Clemente earned the top spot in both girls lacrosse and traditional competitive cheer.
To be considered, teams must have at least five student-athletes with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA (4.0 scale) in the first semester or first two quarters of the 2022-23 school year. The highest team GPA in each sport category by CBED enrollment determines the winners. Schools are divided into two CBED enrollment categories, 1500 and above, and 1499 and below. Each CIF-SS member school is entitled to name a male and female “Student-Athlete of the Year” that must be a senior having maintained a minimum of a 3.5 GPA over the past three years, in addition to earning a letter in at least one varsity sport and participating in extracurricular activities (music, drama, service groups, etc.).
