“This is one of my favorite events each year,” Mayor Laurie Davies serves as Principal for the Day at Niguel Hills Middle School

Community leaders became Principals for the Day at 63 Capistrano Unified schools — the most in recent history. Participants learned what it takes to be a public school principal, toured the school, and met students and parents. After their stint as principal ended, they gathered to share their insights during a special luncheon catered by San Clemente High School culinary arts students. The culinary arts program is one of 28 career and technical education pathways offered in partnership with College and Career Advantage.

City of Laguna Niguel Mayor Laurie Davies visited Niguel Hills Middle School on Friday, Feb. 28. She shared her experience with CUSDInsider.org in this exclusive Q&A.

Do you have children in CUSD? No

Where do you work, what do you do for a living?

I serve as the Mayor of the City of Laguna Niguel.

What did you enjoy most about being principal for a day?

Getting a chance to talk with the students and to see the different programs that are available, especially the special education program.

What did you find most surprising?

The level of engagement between the students and the principal was overwhelmingly positive which was very refreshing to be a part of.

What did you learn?

I learned that there is a great relationship between peer groups at the school and that really helps everyone to feel inclusive. Additionally, I also learned how to make a lava lamp with the science group.

How is the job of school principal similar/different from your job?

They are similar in that safety is a major priority. The City Council sees the safety of residents as the #1 priority – just as the school does with students.

What else would you like the CUSD community to know about your experience today?

That I truly appreciate the hard work that it takes to be an educator. I know firsthand how much work and dedication it takes because my mother was an educator until she was 80 years old.

Mayor Laurie Davies recently joined students, staff and families at Niguel Hills Middle School to celebrate the dedication of Shark Bay, the new street name that ushers visitors on and off the campus.
