Medieval Day at Newhart Middle School gives students close-up look at history
Newhart Middle School recently celebrated its Medieval Day for seventh-graders, which allows students to immerse themselves in world history in a hands-on way.
Students learned about activities from Mesomerica, China, Japan, Africa, and Europe during the middle ages with games like mancala and the life-or-death ball game, as well as activities such as Chinese calligraphy, origami, and making crowns and other artifacts with gold and other metals. The students were also treated to a jousting show on the stage in the school’s multipurpose room.
The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) provided an authentic flare to the event, demonstrating skills and trades of the times in period-appropriate attire. The SCA is an inclusive community pursuing research and recreation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat and culture.
