The Vault opens doors for student expression - CUSD Insider

The Vault opens doors for student expression

An appropriate space for showcasing student extracurricular talent is imperative to growth and achievement. Athletes compete on their fields, courts and pools. Performing artists perform on their stages, amphitheaters and concert halls. Visual artists need their own space to showcase their work, and San Juan Hills recently debuted a unique solution to a space problem.

Typically, San Jun Hills would have one art show per year to showcase all of the incredible work created by students. Space is limited on the busy campus, and there wasn’t one area where the works could be displayed for longer periods of time. Visual arts teacher Avery Arman came up with the idea to install a storage container on campus, providing a permanent space for student art to be displayed year-round. She made the proposal to the administration to utilize Proposition 28 funds to purchase the container, and have the school’s VAPA program manage gallery. Thus, The Vault was born.

The design of the vault was created by a San Juan Hills student, and painted by students as well.

On Friday, Jan. 31, the Vault officially opened its doors with a gallery of work from the AP Drawing class. The event was open to all students, drawing a crowd of hundreds to walk the length of the container to view the artistic expression of their peers. The Vault will continue to evolve over time, with no set schedule for shows operating hours. Mrs. Arman wants it to be available for the campus to use as it sees fit, inviting all courses of study to design coursework involving the exhibits.
