By Sharon Evans, CUSD Block Music Teacher
After elementary block music teacher, Sharon Evans received new tubano drums for her students from the Strike Up the Band grant, she approached the Surfside Quilters Guild (SQG) to see if they would be open to making covers for the new drums. The SQC had previously made over 200 recorder cases for CUSD in 2023, which keep the instruments clean and safe when being used at different schools.
Evans had a prototype that had worked for her in the past and she brought it to a Surfside meeting with Linda Chiu, head of the Philanthropy sub-group and Vickie Janis (a grandmother connected to one of her schools) to see if they would be willing to help. After a little discussion and measurements, Linda and Vickie set out to organize the project and produced a prototype that was tested. Evans provided the funding for the fabric and in January they delivered 50 fleece tubano covers, color coordinated to the three different instrument sizes. The stylish covers are the perfect fit and keep the tubanos protected when not in use.
Working with community members like the Surfside Quilters Guild is a blessing for CUSD schools. The philanthropic seamstresses “provide quilts and pillowcases for the community shelters, Marine baby showers, Meals on Wheels programs, and local hospitals. Quilts are what they call ‘lap-sized’. Not too big but just enough to be a warm hug and hopefully put a smile on the face of children, teens or adults in the area.” If you love to sew and serve, this group meets on the third Wednesday of the month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at The Center for Spiritual Living, 1201 Puerta del Sol, San Clemente. The music program is delighted to have the support of SQG who have graciously created items that will benefit students in the district for many years to come.
