In celebration of National School Lunch Hero Day (May 2), CUSD Insider is showcasing profiles of some of the super food & nutrition services employees we have throughout the District.
Today, we are highlighting Barbara Howland, Lead Food Service Professional in the Central Kitchen.
Q: How long have you worked for CUSD?
A: 19 years
Q: Describe your role in Food & Nutrition Services
A: I used to work at a school site before I transferred to the central kitchen. I was cooking and stocking food items at the school cafeteria, and serving students during lunch service. I’ve probably worked at at least six different school sites. Now I’m working at the Central Kitchen helping prepare and package food items that are sent out to schools. I also work at the production line, scooping, and traying entree’s for the school meals.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A: Being able to feed children that i know is nutritious food. Being busy, i like being busy and be productive at the kitchen.
Q: Why is it important for students to have nutritious, filling meals everyday?
A: They do better in school if they have a nutritious meal. It helps their energy level and brain level to succeed for the day.
Q: What was your favorite school lunch when you were a student?
A: During my time in school back in the day in Washington, we didn’t have the lunches the students at Capo are offered. I remember bringing food from home and I could buy dessert at school.
Q: What is your favorite meal to cook at home?
A: Steak and potatoes with salad.
Q: If you could have lunch with one famous person from any time, who would it be and why?
A: I would like to have lunch with Carol Burnett. She is a legendary comedienne during my time. She is very smart and a great writer/author. She is very talented and i adore her during her time. She makes me laugh all the time.
