Today we are highlighting Michael Tollefson, Fred Newhart Middle School counselor
Q: How long have you worked in CUSD?
A: 3 years
Q: Describe your role in supporting student success at your school or in your department.
A: I am a student advocate which entails creating the framework for a successful student schedule. We offer social emotional support, academic guidance, and review opportunities for college and career pathways. Our department fosters a safe space for students, whatever their needs may be. Our roles are this and so much more.
Q: What role do you play in the MTSS framework? How does this program benefit students in your opinion?
A: I am part of our school’s PBIS Tier II team which supports the MTSS framework. The PBIS Tier II team offers students additional support for students who need more support than tier I can offer. This program is designed to be proactive in identifying students who are at risk behaviorally and academically.
Q: How long have you worked professionally in school counseling?
A: I started my practicum in the Clark County School District in Las Vegas in 2013-14. I was hired as a first year full-time counselor in CCSD for the 2014-15 school year. In total, I have been a school counselor for eight years.
Q: What college degrees and professional certifications do you hold?
A:I have a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in school counseling from Touro University, Nevada.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about counseling work?
A: Helping kids. When I can help a student accomplish their goals or get them to believe in themselves, that’s my reward.
Q: Is there a program that CUSD utilizes that is especially beneficial to student support?
A:I honestly believe our school counseling program is the most beneficial program available to all students. It encompasses all domains of student development. Its is hard to put into words how supportive we are of our students and families. We offer support that ranges from mental health resources to accessing basic necessities.
Q: When you were in school, did you have an impactful experience with a counselor?
A: When I was in school, I did not know I had a counselor. This experience has driven me to reach as many students as possible.
Q: How do counselors in CUSD help support one another?
A: We are constantly communicating with each other on how to best support incoming and outgoing students multiple times a year. Communication is key in ensuring student success.
Q: What is the one thing you would want families to know about your role in student success that they might not be aware of?
A: I am here to support every student and family regardless of need. Student’s needs are my main priority and there is always a way to meet those needs.
