Career Success Sequence teaches students professional skills that will help them land jobs, internships in high school and beyond

By CUSD Insider staff

Capistrano Unified’s College and Career Counseling Program, CUSD Futureology, is hosting four webinars as part of its Career Success Sequence that will give students the 21st-century skills, perspectives, and ideas they’ll need beyond high school.

The first webinar (March 2, 6 p.m.) will seem particularly relevant in a social media world: digital citizenship and communications. Topics will include how to communicate professionally both in-person and online and maintain a proper social media presence.

They’ll also learn how to craft an email. How does it get a professional tone? What about capitalization, punctuation and a greeting?  All will be covered, said Beatrice Nguyen, college and career counselor for Capistrano Unified. A student’s digital footprint, she added, “They need to know that’s something that is forever.”

The second webinar (March 28, 6 p.m.) covers resume building for high school students.

Because they don’t have many years of work experience, certifications and higher education, students will learn what kinds of things they can put on a resume, Nguyen said.

Their resumes can help them get entry-level jobs, volunteer work, internships, and even scholarships, she said.

The third webinar (April 25, 6 p.m.) will cover ever-important interviewing skills. Tips will include the importance of being on time, dressing appropriately, and maintaining good eye contact.

This webinar will delve into best practices on interviews in the digital world on apps like Zoom, where interviews still need good eye contact and an appropriate background on the camera.

“The takeaway is if you have a strong understanding of yourself and are able to draw from some key achievements from high school, students can draw from those experiences to answer pretty much anything on interviews,” Nguyen said.

Applying skills from the other webinars, the culminating event (May 23, 6 p.m.) features mock interviews with real-world professionals whom the students have not met before. Business partners from varied industries participate, including from academia and Silicon Valley.

“We really have a wide breadth of professionals,” Nguyen said.

The partners will also read student resumes and provide feedback.
