As a class project, TK students at Viejo elementary embarked for a second year on a mission to support needy families around the world by donating to charity. This initiative not only allowed them to give back but also provided a rich learning experience that connected classroom lessons to real-life skills.
The students began by learning about community helpers through a variety of engaging activities. They read books about the essential roles people play in society, such as doctors, firefighters, teachers, and bakers. These stories sparked interest and curiosity about the different jobs that make up a community. To deepen their understanding, students participated in role-playing activities in the dramatic center, where they took on the roles of various community helpers. This hands-on experience allowed them to explore the responsibilities of these jobs and develop empathy for those who serve others.
In an effort to give students an opportunity at community jobs, while raising money to buy livestock in partnership with Heifer.org, the students planned and organized a school-wide bake sale. Each child participated in baking or preparing items to sell, allowing them to practice real-life skills. Students practiced being cashiers, baggers, bakers and store owners in class and helped parents bake goods at home for our bake sale. These experiences not only taught them about the effort required to run a successful event but also emphasized the importance of teamwork and communication.
The bake sale was a huge success, with families and community members coming together to support the cause of our TK students. Students’ families played an active role, donating ingredients, volunteering their time, and helping with the event. On April 16th, our TK school bake sale raised $1,670. Our class goal of raising $500 to donate one cow to provide nutritious food, bartering opportunities and a way to generate income was exceeded by our TK students!! In the end, our young students raised enough to donate two cows, three goat, two sheep, one flock of chicks and a bee package for collecting honey through Heifer.org, an organization that supports families in need around the world. Since there was a promotion happening, their efforts were doubled to four cows six goats, four sheep, 2 flocks of chicks and 2 bee packages!
Of the total money raised, $354 was donated by the children’s own hard-earned money, doing chores at home or helping neighbors. One student and her family was so inspired that they made their own lemonade/bake sale the previous week to help raise more money. From this event, the child proudly brought in $182 to contribute to our cause.
Through this project, the students not only helped their community but also gained valuable knowledge and life skills. They learned about the importance of community helpers, the power of giving back, and how working together can make a positive impact. The entire experience benefited both the young learners and the families they helped, creating a ripple effect of kindness and support within their community.
My students know that although small, they too can make a huge impact in the world! They are small but mighty! Our future looks bright!
