CUSD provides free meals all summer

By Maddie Molloy

Capistrano Unified School District Food and Nutrition Services is providing free summer meal kits for all children 18 and under.

Meal kits will provide breakfast and lunch for seven days, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a half-gallon of milk. Every Tuesday from June 15 to July 27, free summer meal kits will be available for pick up at the following locations:

  • Las Flores K-8, 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
25862 Antonio Parkway, Rancho San Margarita, CA, 92688
  • CUSD Food and Nutrition Office, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
32972 Calle Perfecto, San Juan Capistrano, CA, 92675
  • Wood Canyon Elementary, 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
23432 Knollwood, Aliso Viejo, CA, 92656

In addition to the summer meal kits, free breakfast and lunch will be available to all students attending CUSD summer programs.

“Research shows school meals contribute to the health, attentiveness, behavior, and academic success of students,” said Kristin Hilleman, Director of Food and Nutrition Services for Capistrano Unified School District. “Allowing all students to receive free meals ensures equal access to the benefits of our safe and nutritious food.”

“Free meals for all students also allows the stigma of the school meal program to fade; this is a wonderful thing to see,” she said. “In addition, free meals for all students provides food security for our students and their families who may be struggling with economic uncertainty or the challenges of balancing work and their students heading back to school.”

The free meals program for all CUSD students has been extended through the 2021 – 2022 school year. No application is necessary for students to receive free meals.

CUSD Food and Nutrition Services strives to provide nutritious meals students will enjoy in a safe friendly environment.

“We encourage all of our families to take advantage of school meals this year; they are convenient and free for all students,” Hilleman added. “Not only will you save time grocery shopping and preparing breakfast and lunch, but you will extend your household food budget too. Our kid-friendly favorites are lower in sodium, fat and saturated fat. Each meal contains whole grains, protein, fruits, veggies and milk. Please join us on campus for free breakfast and lunch.”
