The bold red, black and white “SC” letters that overlook San Clemente High School’s football stadium have been given a fresh update, bringing renewed energy to a longstanding campus landmark. San Clemente sophomore Jackson Ortiz initiated and organized the restoration as his final project to become an Eagle Scout.
Once a striking visual centerpiece, the hillside letters had grown weathered and faint, blending into the landscape and losing the impact they once held. A Triton football player himself, Jackson sees the sign on a daily basis and wanted to maintain its presence as a source of Triton pride. With careful planning and collaboration with school leadership, he mobilized the resources needed to complete the project, raising over $11,000 for concrete, decorative rocks and lighting.

Built in 1960, the interlocking SC logo is a constant visual on campus, and for all who pass by on the I-5 freeway. When the restoration was complete and ready to be unveiled in March, there was a surprise visitor to help commemorate the occasion. Clyde Lacher helped pour the concrete for the original letters, and stood alongside Jackson as the new SC was lit up for the first time.

Beyond the visual transformation, the project has helped reestablish a connection between students and the school’s traditions. The revitalized sign stands as a reflection of student-driven leadership and dedication to preserving campus identity.
Now prominently visible from the stadium and surrounding neighborhoods, the restored letters serve as a bold reminder of the spirit and legacy that define San Clemente High School.
