Marblehead students raise money to help sea animals

Marblehead Elementary has a focus on environmental studies, providing core education principles and helping student develop an understanding that stewardship of the Earth is everyone’s responsibility. A key aspect of this initiative is partnership with local environmental agencies that provide unique learning opportunities for students. The Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach gave Marblehead kindergarten and first grade students the experience of a lifetime recently.

The students were studying marine mammals, so the PMMC staff came to school to teach them about the work they do to support the animals. The students were so inspired that they set out to raise money to help support the PMMC, bringing in over $2,200 with yard sales, lemonade stands, popsicle sales and donations.

As a thank you, the PMMC invited the students to a sea lion release party on May 21, so they could watch two rescued and rehabilitated animals go back to their natural habitat.
