Ryan Healy was going about his normal routine with his first period class on Wednesday, April 29, preparing them for the opening of their production of Newsies Jr. coming up. He was surprised by a group of people coming into the MPR, led by OCDE Superintendent Dr. Stefan Bean. His students were in on the surprise, and let out a boisterous cheer when Dr. Bean announced that Mr. Healy had been selected as an Orange County Teacher of the Year.

Mr. Healy was one of the six teachers selected by OCDE for the 2027 recognition. He received a $25,000 award from the Orange County Teachers of the Year Award Foundation, established by the William, Jeff and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation, and will be formally honored at a gala on Nov. 13 at the Disneyland Hotel.

Mr. Healy’s family and Marco Forster colleagues, along with CUSD trustees Lisa Davis, Jennifer Adnams, Gila Jones and Judy Bullockus, superintendent Dr. Chris Brown and several administrators were also on hand to congratulate him on the amazing honor.

The students had one more surprise for the entire group, performing Carrying the Banner as a sneak peak of their upcoming show.

Mr. Healy is in his ninth year teaching English Language Development, theater, stagecraft and yearbook while leading the Peer Assistance Leadership program at his alma mater middle school. He has built the Marco Forster theatre program into one of the finest in the area, producing three shows each year that involve nearly all of the Roadrunner students. This year, they showcased Shrek Jr. and Newsies Jr.
