CUSD Counselor Spotlight: Julie Chutuk

In celebration of National School Counseling Week, CUSD Insider is showcasing profiles of the fantastic counselors we have throughout the District.

Today we are highlighting Julie Chutuk, Kinoshita Elementary counselor.

Q: How long have you worked in CUSD?

A: This is my 20th year!

Q: Describe your role in supporting student success at your school or in your department.

A: As a school counselor I am committed to the academic, career and social emotional growth of my students. I support students by fostering a safe and supportive school climate where they can build the skills necessary for long term success. As counselors we teach students how to develop empathy and respect for others, how to understand and manage their feelings, solve conflicts peacefully and build healthy friendships. Essentially, we strive to support the whole child so students can feel safe, confident and ready to learn.

Q: How long have you worked professionally in school counseling?

A: 20 years. Capistrano is the only district that I have worked for, but I have worked at several schools within the district: Marco Forster Middle School, Bernice Ayer Middle School, Rh Dana Elementary, Arroyo Vista, Ladera Ranch Middle School and of course, Kinoshita Elementary.

Q: What college degrees and professional certifications do you hold?

A: I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in school counseling and a California Pupil Personnel Services Credential.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about counseling work?

A: Being someone that the students trust to share their feelings with and being that bridge to either teacher or family in lifting that student up and moving towards success. Also, it warms my heart when former students come back and share their accomplishments!

Q: When you were in school, did you have an impactful experience with a counselor?

A: I did not, but my grandma was a school counselor for many years. She shared so many stories with me of students that she helped and how she was able to support them in achieving their dreams that it inspired me to follow the same path.

Q: How do counselors in CUSD help support one another?

A: We are able to connect monthly in person to learn and grow together and always have the opportunity to connect with a colleague virtually or over the phone for support. I have always felt like the CUSD counselors genuinely work to lift each other up and always quick to give support where needed.

Q: What is the one thing you would want families to know about your role in student success that they might not be aware of?

A: I want families to know that I am here as a partner in their child’s success. I work alongside families and teachers to help students build the social, emotional and problem solving skills they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
