The cold, rainy weather outside couldn’t dampen the tropical spirit of the Sunshine Awards, which enjoyed its 10th celebration at the Capo Valley theatre on March 5. The annual award ceremony hosted by the Special Education Community Advisory Committee (CAC) honors the teachers and staff members who make a difference with special education students.
Each year, parents, family members, and friends of students in special education are encouraged to write letters nominating teachers and staff members who work with and inspire the children. The honorees are recognized during the ceremony and presented with a certificate. A few parents read their nomination letters to the crowd, and there were music and dance performances by special education students.
For the second year, CAC presented the Big Kahuna Award for extraordinary achievement in special education advocacy. The entire Castille Elementary team received the Big Kahuna Award this year, with the most Sunshine Award nominations in the District.
